Nokomis Won't Be Getting Any New Stimulus Funds

Sealed bids for a city owned Wells Cargo trailer were opened at the Nokomis City Council meeting
on Monday evening. Eleven bids were received ranging from a low bid of $210 to the highest and
winning bid of $2,225.75, submitted by Don Tooley. He was informed he could take possession of the
trailer on Tuesday morning once payment was received.

Mayor Keith Hancock announced the City of Nokomis had not been awarded any additional stimulus
funding for projects previously submitted including a major renovation of water lines. Likewise, a grant
to hire a full time police officer had also been rejected. He did, however, remind those in attendance
that the city had received about $30,000 in highway maintenance upgrades from previous stimulus
funding awards.

Paul and Ricki Sullivan addressed the council about a dispute they encountered with a neighbor
regarding property lines. As the police department had been called in during a recent incident, the
matter was referred to the States Attorney's Office for resolution. Council members suggested a
surveyor could easily resolve the matter by accurately defining the boundaries in question.

Michael O'Malley asked council members if they were still working to approve golf carts for use
within city limits. Mayor Hancock replied that City Attorney Michael Glenn was working on an
ordinance regarding golf cart usage.

During the course of the meeting, the following items were noted/and or approved:

  • Revenues were received from Montgomery County, $33,389 and from the State of Illinois,
    $22,547

  • Monthly bills were approved totaling $97,216

  • The city received a notice from New Wave Communications that crews are going to be
replacing old cable lines with new, fiber optic cable during the upcoming week. During this time,
customers will experience a temporary interruption of service.

Prior to the start of the council meeting, Mayor Hancock and Commissioner Michael Guidish met
with representatives of the Village of Coalton to discuss their ongoing agreement to purchase water
and waste water services from Nokomis.

Hancock offered to provide smoke testing and video services free of charge which might help to
determine if Coalton's sewer system has an infiltration problem. The group plans to meet again in two
weeks to discuss issues pertinent to both.

Following a short closed session, the council reconvened to announce they will notify applicants
seeking full time police positions that interviews will be scheduled for the evening of Monday, Aug. 24.
Those interviews will take place in closed session during the regular council meeting.
