Former Nokomis Skating Rink Demolished
Several visitors were in attendance Monday evening, March 24, for the Nokomis City Council
meeting.
Joe and Bridget Hill complemented the council for the demolition of the old skating rink. They own
adjacent property and inquired about the disposition of the tract, which includes an abandoned
walkway.
Brett Mills asked the council to consider revising city policy which returns water deposits to those
who pay their water bills on time for twelve consecutive months.
He said some of his renters have received their deposit returns, only to move later and not pay their
final water bills. As the owner of the property, he is then responsible for the bill.
Council members verbally supported that change and will seek a legal opinion and ordinance
revision.
Brad Janssen owns one lot in the city and requested that other property adjacent to it be annexed
into the city. The council was in agreement with that proposal, pending legal review.
Recently, a sewer problem was discovered in the southwest part of the city, where discharge from
several homes is going directly into a storm sewer.
City crews will begin working to correct that problem once construction easements are obtained.
Affected property owners will be able to tap into the new sewer line free of charge.
During the course of the meeting, the council noted and/or approved the following:
- Revenue was received from telecommunications tax, $12,441; income tax, $26,450; sales tax,
$18,105; and cable tax, $774.
- Bills were paid totaling $14,415.
- A motion was approved to spend $89,500 on maintenance of streets using Motor Fuel Tax
funds.
- A wastewater treatment filter will be rebuilt at a cost of $13,000, half the cost of a new filter.
The council is considering the purchase of a $1,700 tamper for the Street Department.
Kris Rhodes will continue mowing city parks at a cost of $105 per session.
Park permits were approved for a birthday celebration at Shane Cole Park on April 27 and a
wedding ceremony at Fred B. Johnson Park on May 10.
The resignation of part-time police officer, Valerie Shelton, was accepted effective at the end of the
month.
Prior to the start of their regular meeting, the council met in closed session to begin interviewing
candidates for chief of police.
That process will continue with additional interviews prior to the next meeting, to be held on Monday,
April 14, at 7 p.m.
