Nokomis Water Rates to Increase

The Nokomis City Council met with invited representatives of the Village of Coalton at their
regular meeting on Monday evening, June 8. Tom Detmers, Mike Havera and Tucker Gonet
exchanged ideas with council members and discussed issues regarding water and
wastewater services which are obtained from the city of Nokomis.

Following discussion, they decided to form a committee of members from both
municipalities to regularly meet and discuss future agreements between the two.

An ordinance to increase water rates was introduced at the meeting. If it is eventually
approved, it would see a fifteen cent per thousand gallon increase in water rates and would be
reflected in bills beginning August 15.

Enforcement efforts regarding liquor establishments have been increased to insure
compliance in response to citizen complaints about excessive noise and consumption of
alcoholic beverages outside of establishments.

During the course of the meeting, the council noted and/or approved the following:

  • Revenues were received from income tax, $18,552 and utility tax, $8,430

  • Monthly bills totaling $30,832 were approved

  • The prevailing wage agreement was approved

  • Spraying for mosquitos has begun

  • Fourteen heavy duty trash containers have been ordered for placement throughout the
    downtown area

  • The resignation of part-time police officer Gary Mellor was accepted

Plans continue regarding the design and construction of restroom facilities at Fred B.
Johnson Park.  Dave Weitekamp is to begin the process of installing energy efficient lighting in
city hall, the file room, and the mayor's office

The council will meet again on Monday, June 22, at which time they will entertain an open
discussion to determine if golf carts should be allowed within city limits. Residents are
encouraged to attend and express their views.
