NPD Identifies Arson Suspects
Posted March 14, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Nokomis Police Chief Michael Schoo noted that two juveniles had been identified as suspects in the Front
Street fire at the old ski factory. Eight hundred bales of hay, which were being stored at the facility,
were set on fire and resulted in the Nokomis Fire Department and several additional fire departments
being called upon to fight the blaze. Once extinguished, the hay smoldered for several days.  Mayor
Hancock recommended Schoo to place letters of commendation in the personnel files of Officers David
Scott and Tim Fortkamp for their work in finding those who were responsible. The identity of the two
juveniles will not be released; however, the disposition of their case is now in the hands of the Illinois
states attorney's office.

Nokomis Looks For Stimulus Funds
Posted March 13, 2009 at 2:40 pm
The Nokomis City Council met before a packed house Monday evening as members of the Nokomis
Rotary were in attendance.  “We're not here to complain,” said member Judy Hard.  “We thought it would
be a great idea to experience first-hand what goes on during a council meeting,” explained Rotary
President Jeanne Boyles.  Throughout the meeting, members of the Rotary and the city council shared a
productive dialogue over a number of issues pertinent to the city.  Mayor Keith Hancock noted he was in
receipt of a letter from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) with revisions to their plan to
resurface Route 16 through the city. As a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009,
the cost to resurface the 1.8 mile stretch, including parking lanes, will be paid entirely with federal funds.
This modification will save the city over $30,000. [
