Nokomis Approves Pay Raise

The Nokomis School Board had it in high gear on Tuesday evening as they tackled a wide variety of
issues throughout their three-hour meeting. Topping off the night was the approval of bargaining
agreements with district employees that, for the most part, will be in effect through the 2011-12 school

Nokomis City Council Passes New Budget

A 15-minute public hearing on the 2008-09 budget preceded the final meeting of the month for the
Nokomis City Council. The proposed budget calls for expenditures of approximately $1,841,000 for the
upcoming fiscal year. It does not cut into the cash reserves and investment balances of $464,000 which

Former Nokomis Skating Rink Demolished

Several visitors were in attendance Monday evening, March 24, for the Nokomis City Council meeting.
Joe and Bridget Hill complemented the council for the demolition of the old skating rink. They own
adjacent property and inquired about the disposition of the tract, which includes an abandoned walkway.

ABATE Bike Show Approved

Several visitors were on hand Monday evening for the first Nokomis City Council meeting of the new
year. Dave Warren approached the council with a request on behalf of the A Brotherhood Aimed Toward
Education (ABATE) to hold it's Shoal Creek annual bike show in Nokomis on Sunday, July 20. The group
would like to block off Front Street and host activities from noon to 3 pm, at which time they would
proceed on a memorial bike ride. [Full Story]
Illinois Smoking Ban To Take Effect When Ball Drops

A new law takes effect on the first, banning smoking in all indoor public spaces and workplaces. Smoking
will also be prohibited within 15 feet of such places. Illinois Department of Public Health spokesperson
Kimberly Parker says violators will face fines. Smokers can still light up in their own homes and cars and
smoking will be allowed in private nursing home rooms, some hotel rooms and in retail tobacco shops.
Charter TV A Thing Of The Past For Nokomis Customers

You may not have noticed a change in your cable television or internet service, but you will once you
receive your bill for the month of December. As of December 1st, New Wave Communications formally
assumed responsibility from Charter Communications for providing cable television and internet service
in our area. The acquisition, which has taken months, means that former Charter customers will see a
change on their bills including the New Wave name, logo, billing address and phone number. In addition
to introducing phone service, New Wave will also be offering High Definition Television and Digital
Recorders during the next year. New Wave Communications is a family owned, family oriented company
involved in the cable industry since its beginning and is based out of Sikeston, Missouri.
Nokomis Schools Receive Top State Awards

North Elementary School, South Middle School and the Nokomis Junior High School have each received
an Academic Improvement Award from the Illinois State Board of Education. Criteria for selecting these
schools are rigorous, according to the Illinois State Board of Education, which funds the Honor Roll. All
schools must be making Adequate Yearly Progress, benchmarks set by the state and required by the
federal No Child Left Behind Act. To receive an Academic Improvement Award, schools must show an
increase of 7.5% of students meeting annual goals in math and reading between the 2005 and 2006
school report cards or must show an increase of 15% in math and reading between the 2004 and 2006
report cards.
Nokomis Board Gets Ramp Plan

On Tuesday evening, Nov. 20, David Lipe presented architectural blueprints and bid specifications for
the construction of an ADA ramp designed to replace a faulty wheelchair lift at the Nokomis High School.
The project includes demolition of existing railings and stairs and the construction of a concrete ramp,
new walls, metal handrails, doors and frames. Bids will be accepted until Dec. 14. [Full Story]
Water Exploration Moves Forward

Although the Nokomis City Council was short handed when they met Monday evening, they were long on
substance. Lance Lehnen presided in the absence of Mayor Keith Hancock and Commissioner Terry Hill.
Mark Wiley of the Farnsworth Group, Bloomington, made a presentation about the next step in

Thornton Found Mentally Fit

Kevin Thornton, 24, Nokomis, has been found to be mentally fit and will stand trial for first degree murder.
Thornton is charged with the stabbing death of John A. Burkett, 29, of Pana, at 5:16 p.m. Dec. 9, 2006,
in the Pana Wal-Mart parking lot. Both Thornton and Burkett were Army soldiers who'd been stationed
together in Germany, and Thornton was allegedly distraught because his wife, Sarah, allegedly had an
affair with Burkett while he was in Iraq. Burkett moved to Pana after his release from the military. A
pretrial hearing will be held on Aug. 9, at which time the court will schedule any pretrial motions for
hearing. The case is being prosecuted by Christian County State's Attorney Brad Paisley. Thornton is
being held in Christian County jail with bond set at $3 million.
